Two undefeated Junior National Baseball Teams met this week for the Washington County Championship. The North Plains team, the county's West champions, beat the East champs,
the Reedville Red, in a nail biter, 6-5.  The team, whose members hail from North Plains, Banks and the surrounding area, is on to Albany for the state tournament against other county champions.  The North Plains players like to downplay their individual achievements. Even so, Monday's outstanding play by North Plains' 12-year-old pitchers, Justin Bral and Tai Martinez-Lutali, was a key factor in the tournament win.  Martinez-Lutali allowed one run in the two innings he pitched, while Bral struck out five, and hit a three-run homer in the six-inning game.

The team was led by Travis Cox, whose coaching helped the team become state champs in 2007. Expectations are high for the championship tournament, which runs July 21-24.
